Does converting to WebP lose quality

Not if you keep the settings sensible. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression. Lossless keeps every pixel exactly as it was in the PNG, just packaged more efficiently. Lossy trims a little more, and at a high setting the difference is invisible to the eye while the file gets noticeably smaller. For most web use, a quality setting somewhere in the high eighties gives you a good balance, small file, no visible artifacts.

Will the transparent background survive the conversion

The questions worth settling before you convert something you cannot replace.

JPEG for photographs that need to open absolutely anywhere, including old software and stubborn upload forms. WebP when you control where the picture is going, since it is typically a quarter to a third smaller than a JPEG of the same visual quality and it keeps transparency. PNG for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with crisp text or hard edges. AVIF is smaller again where your browser can write it and the destination accepts it, though support is thinner than WebP.

It gets filled in, because JPEG has no transparent pixels at all. There is no way around it in that format. The tool warns you when any of your pictures have see through areas and lets you choose what colour goes behind them, rather than deciding on white and letting you discover it later. If you need the transparency kept, choose WebP or PNG instead.

Almost always because a photograph was converted into PNG. PNG records every pixel exactly, which is perfect for flat graphics and terrible for photographs, where it can easily produce a file several times the original. Going the other way, a screenshot pushed into JPEG gets smaller but the text picks up fuzzy edges. Match the format to the content and both problems disappear.

An animated GIF loses its animation, because the result is a single picture and only the first frame is kept. An SVG is a set of drawing instructions rather than pixels, so converting it means drawing it at a chosen size, and the result no longer scales cleanly the way the original did. Keep the SVG if you will ever need it larger.

Yes, as a side effect of how conversion works here. The picture is drawn onto a canvas and written out fresh, which leaves EXIF behind, including GPS coordinates, the camera model and the date. That is worth having before a photograph goes onto a listing or social media. It also means a shooting date you wanted to keep will not survive, so hold on to the original if that matters.
