What SVG Is, and Why You Would Convert PNG to It

A PNG is a fixed grid of coloured dots. Zoom in far enough and you eventually see the individual squares, because that grid only has so much information stored in it to begin with. What This Tool Is Actually Good At

Vectorization is genuinely excellent for a specific kind of image: one with clear, distinct areas of colour and clean edges. That covers a lot of ground. Being Honest About Photos and Gradients

Here is the part that matters most to get right, rather than oversell. Converting a PNG to SVG does not magically recover detail, and it does not turn a photo into a crisp illustration. Vectorization works by tracing the actual shapes and colour regions already present in the image. A smooth gradient or a photograph has no hard edges to trace in the first place, so the result comes out as a series of flat colour bands rather than a smooth blend, because that is genuinely what vector shapes are capable of representing.

Getting a Cleaner Result

  • Start with a clean source image. A crisp PNG traces into a crisp SVG. A blurry or heavily compressed PNG will trace its own blurriness just as faithfully, so cleaning up the original first, or using a higher resolution version if you have one, pays off. Our image compressor works the other direction if the SVG output itself ends up needing a smaller companion PNG for somewhere an SVG isn’t supported.
  • Use fewer colours for logos. Six to ten colours is usually plenty for a typical logo, and fewer colours means simpler, cleaner paths, which matters even more if the file is headed for a cutting machine.
  • Turn on white as transparent if your PNG has a plain white background rather than a genuinely transparent one, so the background doesn’t get traced as a solid white shape sitting behind everything else.
  • Check the live preview before committing. Since the preview shows the real traced result, not a guess, it’s the fastest way to see whether your settings need adjusting before you save anything.
